Project Description

The Lancaster Animal Shelter is undergoing renovations which will be complete in the fall of 2010. The renovations include construction of a new 3,200 square foot kennel building, a 900 square foot cat holding facility and a 2,400 square foot barn.  Artist Jose Antonio Aguirre has designed artwork for the exterior of several buildings on the campus.  The artwork, to be fabricated in Venetian glass mosaic, is inspired by former shelter animals that have had successful adoptions and intends to promote the philosophies of the Department of Animal Care and Control.

The Department of Animal Care and Control is one of the largest and most progressive animal control agencies in the United States. It serves more than 3,200 square miles of cities, deserts, beaches and mountains and provides animal control and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Lancaster Animal Shelter serves a large geographical area that includes the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale, as well as the unincorporated areas of Lake Los Angeles, Lake Elizabeth, Lake Hughes, Llano, Leona Valley, Pearblossom, Valyermo and Quartz Hill. The shelter provides many services including low-cost spaying and neutering, free veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, licensing, emergency rescues and humane investigations. The renovations will allow the shelter to better provide these services for this rapidly growing service area.
