Municipal Cultural Planning Initiative

In 2006/2007, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission’s Productivity Investment Fund to support the development of five cultural plans.

Cultural planning is a public process in which community representatives undertake a structured community assessment and planning process that focuses on arts and cultural resources, needs and opportunities. The planning process is designed to build on each municipality's unique assets and needs.

The Arts Commission engaged consultants experienced in cultural planning to facilitate the planning process for the municipalities of Pomona, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, Burbank and in the unincorporated area of Lennox. The unique results of these planning efforts can be downloaded by clicking on the links below.

Municipal Resources
As a precursor in 2005, the Arts Commission surveyed municipalities, hosted a meeting of staff representatives of 23 cities and convened the first forum for municipal arts commissioners. These three activities provided an in-depth picture of the challenges faced in funding, advocacy and governance. A copy of the 2005 assessment of the level of arts programming in the County's 88 municipalities can be requested by contacting the Arts Commission.
