Development Manager, Ford Theatre Foundation

This position, reporting operationally to the Managing Director of the Ford Theatres, manages and executes grant writing, individual donor cultivation and supports board development for the Ford Theatre Foundation in Hollywood, California.

BACKGROUND

The Ford Theatre Foundation, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Department of Parks and Recreation, supports and produces programs based out of the John Anson Ford Theatres complex that nurture the development of Los Angeles County-based artists, arts organizations and audiences with innovative programs designed to engage and encourage participation in the live performing arts. The John Anson Ford Theatres complex is one of the oldest performing arts venues in Los Angeles still in use and includes the open air Ford Amphitheatre and intimate indoor [Inside] the Ford theatre. Each year, the Ford hosts nearly 200 diverse dance, music, theatre, film and family events that cultivate a community spirit for the people of greater Los Angeles to discover and understand cultures of their region and the world.

The Development Manager will serve a critical function in supporting the Foundation’s expanded efforts to build a vibrant and diverse community centered on the live performing arts. Currently, the Foundation is embarking on plans to renovate and expand both its facilities and programming in order to deepen its impact on the greater Los Angeles region. JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Managing and executing the Ford Theatre Foundation’s corporate, foundation and government grants including conducting research and making recommendations on grant opportunities; producing high quality proposals for new and continuing grant opportunities; developing systems and protocols to manage and track grant awards; generating interim and final grant reports and preparing all correspondence regarding grants administration.
  • Conceptualizing, developing and implementing a year-round individual giving campaign for the Ford Theatre Foundation including: researching and making recommendations on effective donor campaigns appropriate to Ford Theatres’ audiences and stakeholders; cultivating new donors, implementing new programs and producing special events that engage and expand the individual donor pool; renewing and upgrading current donors through annual giving, end-of-year giving, and special appeals; overseeing donor benefit fulfillment; building relationships with donors and prospects; and planning and coordinating donor and patron events.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact with the Ford Theatre Foundation’s Board of Directors to coordinate meetings; assist in the identification and recruitment of new board members; respond to board member requests for information and communicate development initiatives with the Board.
  • Interview and coordinate with both Ford Theatres staff and organizational partners to produce grant proposals and reports that illustrate the work of the John Anson Ford Theatres in a clear and compelling manner.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Successful applicants will:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably with major course work in the arts or a related field;
  • Have two or more years experience in non-profit development including experience with individual donors, grant-writing and board relations, preferably in the performing arts field;
  • Have outstanding written and oral communication skills;
  • Be detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and work well under pressure to meet competing deadlines;
  • Be dependable, responsive, prepared and flexible with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; and
  • Have strong command of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with the ability and willingness to learn new software/operating systems, including development tracking software.

E-Communications Coordinator
Los Angeles County Arts Commission
 

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission seeks a full-time E-Communications Coordinator to support the marketing and public relations of the Arts Commission as a whole, as well as all Commission programs including Arts Education, Civic Art, Grants & Professional Development and Productions (encompassing Ford Theatres, Holiday Celebration and Free Concerts). Electronic communications have assumed a significantly larger role in the past two years with the Arts Commission’s entry into the new media universe. The Arts Commission is now active on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr and continues to hone its Web sites and other e-communications tools as an integral part of its communications strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working as part of the Arts Commission’s communications team, reporting to the Director of Communications and working in tandem with designated staff from each Arts Commission programmatic division, the E-Communications Coordinator implements the communications strategies of the Arts Commission in the new media area. Duties include:

  • Coordinating the social media/email blast editorial schedule and participating in the creation and implementation of same – i.e. what will be talked about when; what content assets are needed for which online platforms.
  • Liaising with Ford Theatres winter and summer partners and Holiday Celebration artists to maximize their use of new media.
  • Preparing approved content for Web site, email blasts and social media sites.
  • Updating and maintaining Web and social media sites, including preparing and uploading photo, audio and video content.
  • Replying to posts and tweets by constituents.
  • Collecting user data for Web sites, email blasts and social media and preparing quarterly reports.
  • Archiving Web site content.
  • Troubleshooting simple Web site problems, such as broken links.
  • Keeping abreast of current new media trends and proactively researching future new media possibilities and assets for consideration.

COMPENSATION:
$32,000 annually, plus benefits (health and dental). This is a one-year, full-time contract position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Communications experience supporting public relations and marketing functions
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Understanding of social media techniques and platforms
  • Experience working within content management system (CMS) for Web site maintenance
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, Publisher and Powerpoint
  • Experience editing text for presentation online as well as cropping/resizing/compressing images and editing audio and video material for Web use

J.A.M. SESSIONS MARKETING COORDINATOR

The Ford Theatre Foundation seeks a full-time, seasonal (March through October) marketing/PR coordinator to develop and implement grassroots marketing campaigns for six series of J.A.M.s  at six L.A. County park sites, as well as single J.A.M.s at 6 community centers. These participatory workshops are a major expansion of the popular Ford Theatre Foundation-sponsored J.A.M. Sessions held at Ford Theatres for the last several years. J.A.M. Sessions engage members of the public in song, dance and art-making alongside professional artists, leading participants to discover their inner artists. The expansion is made possible by a grant from Metabolic Studio, a direct charitable activity of the Annenberg Foundation, led by Artist and Foundation Director Lauren Bon.   

DUTIES

The position will be responsible for providing essential support to the Arts Commission’s Director of Communications, Productions Marketing Manager and General Manager of Productions to design and implement an umbrella communications plan for all the J.A.M. Session series described above. Duties include: working closely with part-time marketing liaisons recruited from each community to determine what types of communications works best in each community and overseeing the execution of those specialized marketing and public relations campaigns for each J.A.M. Session series location; overseeing the development and distribution of printed and digital marketing materials; generating and distributing press releases; planning and overseeing related social media and Web marketing efforts; and documenting the J.A.M. experience both in writing and visually.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates will have strong presentation and people-to-people skills; superior writing, organizational and proofreading skills; strong knowledge of and experience with electronic and social media marketing; experience working with graphic artists and designers; knowledge of printing and photography; the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously,  work independently with minimal supervision, consistently meet multiple deadlines under pressure; and have a car and valid driver’s license. Experience in a nonprofit arts organization and commitment to service in the field is important.

COMPENSATION

This is an eight month, full-time seasonal contract position (March through October), with a rate of $3,375 per month.

Internship Opportunity for Undergraduate or Graduate Students

Hours: This position is part time and can be tailored around school schedules. Students should be prepared to commit to an agreed upon work schedule for a minimum of three months.

Pay Rate: Arts for All internships are unpaid.

Qualifications: Interested students must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college, community college or business college. Arts background or major is not required, but students interested in gaining experience in the arts or arts administration will be given preference.

Position Description: Work with Arts for All staff on arts education programming, which may include: professional development sessions for school district administrators, Arts for All coaches and/or arts education professionals; online funding, research and programming resources, and grant programs for school districts. While Arts for All interns tend to work across our program areas, specific projects and tasks may be tailored to interns' specific academic interests.

Skills Required: This position requires a person with exceptional organizational, research, writing and communication skills. Basic computer skills, such as Word and Excel, will be necessary for material creation and project tracking. A background in arts education would be an advantage to the position, as would an interest in arts administration, evaluation techniques, and/or arts in the public sector.

Location: The Arts Commission is located in downtown LA just west of the 110 Freeway, a few blocks from a Red line Metro station. Parking is provided.

Project Description:  The Ford Theatres in Hollywood is in search for a communications intern to help with marketing campaigns for the 2012 Ford Summer Amphitheatre Season, a multi-disciplinary performing arts venue that runs music, dance, family events & film from June through October and the 2011-12 [Inside] the Ford winter season, an indoor black-box theatre that partners with local theatre companies to present new plays from November - April.  The Ford Theatres is a program of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and is produced in collaboration with Los Angeles County-based arts organizations. 

This position offers an opportunity to work closely with experienced public relations/marketing professionals and add significant experience to your resume.  Work on these projects are year round.

Duties include:

  • Develop ways to increase audience attendance and engagement

  • Assist communications team with day-to-day marketing duties
